Hey, Readers!
Today, I want to share my thoughts on Splendid, Julia Quinn’s debut novel. For fans of historical romance and Julia Quinn’s signature style, this book offers a fun look into where it all began, long before the world of Bridgerton made her a household name.
Set in the Regency era, Splendid tells the story of Alexander Ridgely, the Duke of Ashbourne, and Emma Dunster, a spirited American heiress. Emma’s sharp wit and ambition to run her father’s business make her stand out from other society debutantes. She’s determined to live life on her terms, which creates a delightful tension between her and Alexander, a self-assured bachelor who’s equally resistant to marriage.
Their paths cross in the most unexpected way—when Emma saves Alexander’s nephew from a carriage accident. Sparks fly immediately, and while neither of them is eager to settle down, their undeniable chemistry sets the stage for a compelling romance.
Reading an author’s debut novel is always fascinating. You get a glimpse into their early style and storytelling. Even in her first book, Julia Quinn’s signature humor, vibrant characters, and romantic tension shine through. Emma’s plucky determination and Alexander’s charm create a dynamic that’s both engaging and heartwarming.
I particularly enjoyed how Emma’s relationship with her cousins added depth to her character. She’s loyal, brave, and willing to take risks for the people she loves—even when it involves navigating a sticky situation with her male cousin’s gambling debt.
I’ll admit, the first half of the book was a bit of a slow burn. Much of the initial conflict revolves around Emma and Alexander’s mutual resistance to marriage, which felt a little repetitive at times. But once the stakes are raised—enter the villain and the cousin’s debt dilemma—the pace picks up dramatically. From there, it’s classic Julia Quinn, with twists, humor, and plenty of heart.
If you’re a fan of historical romance or just love Julia Quinn’s work, Splendid is a must-read. It’s an easy, enjoyable story with lovable characters and a satisfying romance. Plus, it’s always fun to see how an author’s early works compare to their later masterpieces.
I give Splendid two thumbs up for its charming characters and engaging storyline. While it may not have the polish of her later works, it’s a delightful read that’s perfect for curling up with on a cozy afternoon.
